?$ Which Dollar, Inc.'s Mission

Our mission is to provide financial assistance to qualified cancer patients and their families.  With your monetary and volunteer commitment, we can attain our goal by relieving the day-to-day stress of the high cost for treatment.  This relief allows the patient to concentrate on treatment and recovery.

Letter from the Executive Director

?$WHICH DOLLAR, INC. was established in January of 2005 as an American Cancer Society Relay for Life fundraising team.  Our inspiration, Frank E. McDavid was undergoing treatment for colon cancer and a group of friends banded together and formed the ?$WHICH DOLLAR team to show our support for Frank in the battle for his life.

?$WHICH DOLLAR you ask?  The name came about at our first meeting.  Our thoughts went to “Which dollar will it take to find a cure”?  In the long run, it does not matter which dollar or who it came from.  As a Relay team, we dedicated ourselves to accrue as much funding as possible to help find a cure for this dreaded disease.

After successfully raising funds for two Relay teams, the group decided that more could be done on our part to provide aid for cancer patients.  We asked ourselves, “Where was all of the money that was collected going?”  “What if anything was being done for folks who were experiencing a financial crisis due to the lack of health insurance, increased medical bills and inability to work?”  After researching these questions, we found that the majority of funding after administrative costs was directed to research and not to a patient’s economic needs.  We discovered that for those who are underserved or underinsured, cancer imposes heavy economic burdens on both patients and their families.  To our surprise, many of the people who fit the perimeters of being underserved and underinsured are in the middle class.  People such as you who work everyday, have medical insurance and do not require financial aid from other sources until they or a family member have been diagnosed with a form of cancer.  Once cancer has been detected there are additional expenses and quite possibly, lost time from work.  Medical care for cancer can be quite expensive and often only a portion may be covered by health insurance plans.  There are many non-medical costs related to cancer care that can create a negative financial impact.  In addition to increasing medical costs, their income may be decreasing.  If the cost of cancer care far exceeds their resources what part of their life suffers?  Does a person undergoing treatment pay their power bill or buy their medication?  Do they have the funds to keep current the mortgage/rent because they have not been able to work this week due to the side effects of treatment?

After much thought, we knew exactly which path to take and our thought process became “Which dollar is it going to take to help a patient in recovery while researchers work to find a cure”?
